As of this writing, New York State's ban on the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits in retail pet shops has been in effect for over four months. Some pet store owners found the law unwarranted, but animal rescue advocates appreciate its goals of ending "the puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline" and encouraging adoptions from rescue organizations.

On Adopt a Shelter Pet Day (April 30) and all year long, there is no question that New Yorkers love their furry friends. Any visit to a city park or greenway will show countless dogs out on a walk, sometimes with more stylish coats and/or shoes than the humans walking them. And any stereotypes about New Yorkers being unfriendly are immediately dispelled when an adorable, friendly dog acts as an icebreaker.
