The unofficial start of summer in the city (aka Memorial Day weekend) is next weekend - so close, yet so far! But this weekend in New York City still offers a vibrant mix of cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and family-friendly fun. From immersive art installations and historic church tours to bike safety events and sunrise walks, there’s something for every interest and pace. Food lovers can indulge in a Texas-style chili cook-off, while night owls can dance the night away on a hip hop boat party.

Whether you're exploring Korean-inspired forests, watching big trucks in action, or trying your hand at juggling in Bryant Park, the city is brimming with unique ways to enjoy spring in full swing. Adding some Open Houses to all the fun is the perfect way to get a sense for the neighborhoods where you’re looking.

The Forest Within, Gwyneth Paltrow-inspired exhibition The Forest Within
Step into a reimagined Korean forest where nature and inner harmony converge, inviting moments of peaceful reflection in a bustling section of the Meatpacking District. Blending surreal digital elements with lush, living greenery, the immersive environment is guided by the mystical presence of the Korean Tiger. Inspired by Gwyneth Paltrow’s wellness philosophy, renowned floral designer Jeff Leatham has crafted a tranquil oasis that leads guests on a serene, sensory journey. It runs through June 29 with visits on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Calvary Church Gramercy Park Calvary Church (New York Landmarks Conservancy)
The 15th annual Sacred Sites Open House will take place May 17-18, 2025 with the theme of “Building for Eternity: Religious Architecture and Artisans.” Participating congregations will showcase their buildings and histories through guided tours, lectures, and musical performances. There are many locations throughout New York, but we're partial to a self-guided tour of the Calvary Church in Gramercy Park.

NYC DOT has free events designed to encourage cycling, promote safety, and celebrate the city's growing bike culture. NYC DOT will host events in May across all five boroughs, including free bicycle helmet fittings, bike light giveaways, educational outreach for delivery workers, and a variety of bicycle-focused programming. Stop by Juniper Valley Park, an especially bucolic setting, to get your bike helmet fit checked on Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.!

Solace Sunrise Walk, suicide prevention walk Solace House
Solace House's yearly 5K walk/run raises funds and awareness for suicide and self-harm prevention. Those participating on Saturday, May 17 will register at 4:30 a.m. and begin at 5:00 a.m.. Their walk from the darkness of pre-dawn into the bright, sun-filled morning, symbolizing the journey many in suicidal distress undertake. This year's event marks the tenth anniversary and sends a message: You are not alone.

Sure, you could pick up your produce at the supermarket...but wouldn't it be more fun and yield fresher, tastier results at a centrally located greenmarket? The Murray Hill Farmers Market runs on Second Avenue between East 32nd and 33rd Streets on Saturdays, and we recommend arriving early to avoid crowds.

Randall's Island Big Truck Day Big Truck Day! (Randall's Island Park Alliance)
Visit Randall’s Island Park for their free annual Big Truck Day celebration on Saturday, May 17 from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. with close-up views of the large vehicles that keep New York City clean and safe. Learn how garbage truck drivers, police officers, farmers, and other big truck operators use these vehicles to drive our city forward, and you might even get to sit in the front seat.

Dance under the stars on open-air dance floors at NYC's ultimate hip hop and R&B boat party! Two levels of music from live DJs as well as fully stocked bars are enhanced by views of iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Freedom Tower. Chili cookoff Texas Exes Chili Cookoff
New York City has no shortage of great barbecue restaurants, but this chili cook-off brings authentic Texas chili to Astoria's Pig Beach (how appropriate!) on Sunday, May 18 from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. It is a five-hour celebration of all-you-can-eat chili and queso (at least until it runs out!), all-you-can-drink Texas beverages, and good ol’ fashion Texas-sized fun. It will also have music, tailgate games, and non-stop play of the Golden Years (i.e. the 2006 Rose Bowl Championship game). And with out-of-state tuition reaching up to $49,000/year, all proceeds will support scholarships for New York students to attend the University of Texas.

Takashi Murakami Gagosian Chelsea Takashi Murakami: JAPONISME → Cognitive Revolution: Learning from Hiroshige (Thomas Barratt, courtesy of Gagosian)
At the Gagosian gallery in West Chelsea, this exhibition of new and recent works by contemporary artist Takashi Murakami extends his interest in the copy -a theme he also explored in Mononoke Kyoto at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art and Japanese Art History à la Takashi Murakami at Gagosian London (both 2024). The exhibition juxtaposes the artist’s reworkings of prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) with those of paintings by artists identified with the nineteenth-century tendency known as Japonisme. It opened last week and is on display Tuesdays through Saturdays until July 11.
