Overview of The Whitman Mansion at 21 East 26th Street

The Whitman Mansion, located at 21 East 26th Street across from Madison Square Park, is a Neo-Georgian-style building originally constructed in 1924 as the headquarters for Clarence B. Whitman and Sons textile company. In 2013, developer David Mitchell of Mitchell Holdings LLC converted the six-story structure into four luxury condominium residences, with Jeffrey Cole serving as the architect.

The building's distinctive architecture features a red-brick façade with a rusticated limestone base, three large arched windows on both the first and top floors, and limestone pilasters between the second and fourth floors. The fifth floor includes a railed terrace with limestone urns, while the sixth-floor penthouse level is set back with three large terraces.

The conversion created four expansive residences, including a remarkable 6,540-square-foot duplex penthouse with 3,000 square feet of outdoor space, complete with a putting green and croquet lawn. The full-floor units feature ArcLinea kitchens with high-end appliances, custom finishes, and luxurious bathrooms outfitted by NY Stone and AF New York.

The building attracted notable residents including Jennifer Lopez, Chelsea Clinton, NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, and hedge-fund trader John Silvetz, each purchasing full-floor units for $10 million or more. The penthouse was initially listed at $22.5 million before being raised to $25 million.

Amenities include a full-time doorman, private gym, keyed elevator with private landings, storage facilities, and a package room. The ground floor contains retail space, and the building features elegant sidewalk landscaping.

Situated in the Madison Park Historic District, The Whitman offers proximity to notable landmarks including the Flatiron Building, MetLife tower, and New York Life Insurance building, as well as the popular Eataly food emporium. The building was originally designed to resemble a London trading house and maintains its historical character while incorporating modern luxury amenities.

Carter’s Review

"The Whitman is a six-story building at 21 East 26th Street across from Madison Square Park that was converted to four large condominium apartments in 2013 by David Mitchell of Mitchell Holdings LLC.

The very handsome building, which extends through the block to 27th Street, was erected in 1924 and was a former showroom building. Mitchell Holdings acquired it in 2011 from Plumbers’ Local 1 for about $13 million."
